Description
This painting is one of several that I have done over the years at a beautiful state park in Arkansas near my home. I have been visiting there most of my life. Petit Jean Mountain rises from the flat Arkansas River plains almost straight up and is now a state park located on about half the mountain top. Winrock, the home and farms of the Winthrop Rockefellar family, occupies most of the rest of the mountain.
This view is from the Petit Jean grave site looking down on the broad Arkansas River. There is a legend that a young French woman was in love with a young Frenchman back in the time of the exploring of America. Her parents disapproved of the match and the heart broken young man decided to sign on to go to sea. Learning of this the young woman disguised herself as a man and took a job on the boat as a cabin "boy". As the explorers were making their way up the Arkansas River, Petit Jean (Little John) fell sick and they took her up the mountain to leave her with the Indians living there while she recovered. Guess what, it was discovered that "he" was a "she"….. Petit Jean died there and the Indians buried her on the mountain bluff overlooking the river. The grave site is marked and part of the features of the park. AWWW young romance.
